Scott Lively gets his day in court

Is there anything extremist right-wing preachers won’t blame on LGBT people? After the Newtown shooting, James Dobson listed tolerance of gay marriage as one of the reasons God’s punishment was directed at a bunch of first graders. And who can forget the classic Jerry Falwell moment, blaming 9/11 on “the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle….”

It’s easy to laugh at wingnuts, but they have millions of followers and their hate, in the name of some perverted concept of God, gives moral cover to the queer bashers and bullies everywhere.

On Monday, we’re going to be face to face with one of them, Scott Lively, in a courtroom in Springfield, MA. If that name isn’t familiar to you like Falwell’s or Dobson’s, that’s because Lively’s unique contribution to this anti-gay agenda is his persecution consulting in other countries, most notably Uganda, where he brags he is known as the “father” of the anti-gay movements.

Many Americans have heard of the infamous “Kill the Gays” bill inUganda, which has been introduced in several parliamentary sessions since it arose out of an anti-gay conference that Scott Lively headlined in 2009. But the day-to-day reality for LGBT Ugandans is already violence, death threats, severe discrimination and oppression. Meetings of LGBT activists are raided and shut down, and advocates have been arrested for exercising their rights to speech, assembly and association. LGBT Ugandans’ advocacy, indeed their existence, is already criminalized.

No one has done more to orchestrate this situation than Scott Lively. Since 2002, he has worked systematically to strip away human rights protections from LGBT people in Uganda and elsewhere around the world, to silence them and make it impossible for them to organize and defend their rights. While he peddles the usual, age-old lie that LGBT people are pedophiles in order to deliberately provoke the rage that feeds the growing repression and violence, he combines that myth with a new twist, that gays were also responsible for the Holocaust and that Hitler’s Germany is what can happen when a gay movement grows unchecked.

  1. Well it’s about time.

Scott Lively has been given a free pass for way too long, whipping up gay panic to a frenzy and getting away with propaganda like “The Pink Swastika” which takes the “One swallow makes a spring” approach to revisionist history…
He basically starts from the premise that Ernst Rohm was Hitler’s Lieutenant at one point. Ernst Rohm was gay, ergo ‘gays caused the holocaust’. He conveniently skips over the fact that Ernst Rohm was bumped off on Hitler’s express orders during the night of the long knives and that gay people were sent to concentration camps in their thousands under the Nazi regime. Not to mention pushing the tried and tested fundie canard of gay being synonymous with paedophile.

He has since claimed he had no idea how his pernicious ideas would be taken up and acted upon in Uganda, and that he never intended them to culminate in the proposed death penalty, which I find disingenuous in the extreme.

Doubtless his defence will hinge on the first amendment whilst attempting to sweep John Stuart Mill’s ‘harm principle’ under the rug.

  2. The name ‘Scott Lively’ will one day be a pejorative for ‘a person who wants to run death camps for anyone not fitting their ideal.’. This man has no love in his heart, no compassion, and no empathy.

  3. I think if you travel to the other side of the world to preach and consult with leaders about the politics of LGBT, it is disingenuous in the extreme to then say you had no idea they would act on it.

Best of luck with this court case.

  4. The only way that a Hitler style Germany can happen from the growth of a gay movement is if a murderous punk like Scott Lively comes along and puts the gay people in death camps. So, I guess, in a way, he is right. Herr Lively.

  5. Its Joseph Goebbels’ “Big Lie” all over again: an extreme right wing political/religious movement whipping up hysteria against one of the Nazi’s favourite targets.

It almost certainly never occurs to him that he is far closer to Nazism than the thing he despises, and a greater danger to his own country

  6. ‘Lively’s unique contribution to this anti-gay agenda’

Don’t emphasize punishment; emphasize rehabilitation. You could be the first country in the world to have a government-sponsored, you know, ex-gay therapy, where someone struggling with this would have the option of going into this instead of being punished for it. 1:24

Scott Lively needs a history lesson if he thinks that Uganda would be the first country to offer the option of rehabilitation over punishment for homosexuality. Alan Turing, the father of modern computing and the person whose efforts at Bletchley Park during World War II played a pivotal role in defeating Hitler and the Nazis, was given the option in 1952 by a grateful UK government of being chemically castrated as an alternative to imprisonment. Turing took his own life when he was just 41 because he couldn’t live like this.

So there you have it, Doctor Lively: the effect of the policies you advocate on a person without whose genius you would no doubt be speaking German and living in a society in which fascism and intolerance are the order of the day, and….. I’ve just spotted the flaw in my reasoning: you’d probably love such a world.

  7. Sadly dangerous cretins like Scott Lively are peddling their misery and hate throughout the world in the twisted belief that anyone who does not agree with them does not deserve to live.
