Here is precisely the logic that led to me abandoning ‘faith’ some years ago. I present it in the hope it may influence others to do likewise :-
Some of you may be old enough to remember Rod Hull and his alter-ego Emu. The anarchic bird was always attacking people…much to the feigned embarrassment of Mr Hull.
It is probably the *best* analogy of a monotheistic God I can think of. God is ‘good’, we are told. All the nastiness and evil comes from some unruly usurper, the Devil, and is *nothing to do with God*.
Hmm, except one could make the case for the Devil being the *ultimate* sock puppet. After all, God created him ! Not only that, but God is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient…….so the Devil’s power cannot be anything other than God’s power, he cannot help but be a ‘part’ of God, and God knows exactly what the Devil is up to and will be up to.
*It is logically impossible to separate the Devil from God…..and have God still be God.*
The moment you grasp that….the whole edifice of Abrahamic religion comes crashing down. In fact it’s a more powerful argument than simply arguing there is no evidence for God.
It is impossible to avoid perceiving the cosmic Rod Hull….desperately trying to pretend that his alter ego isn’t him. Desperately pretending to be ‘good’….while threatening us with the cosmic Emu for all eternity if we don’t love him.
