Christian-based scouting group launches after Boy Scouts allow gay youth

Sep 8, 2013

Families looking for an alternative to the Boy Scouts of America after the group voted to drop its ban on gay youth earlier this year descended on Nashville, Tenn., this weekend to help launch a Christian-based scouting organization.

More than 1,200 former Scout officials, parents and youth from 44 states were attending the two-day national leadership convention where the group unveiled its name – Trail Life USA – and logo, officials with the group said. One of the founders John Stemberger, a former Eagle Scout and father of two scouts, created OnMyHonor.Net, a coalition of disgruntled BSA members who left the organization after the controversial vote in May.

“Most of us are coming from a highly-structured environment that has 103 years of culture and language and program and symbols … and we are starting from scratch,” Stemberger said late Friday as he asked for patience as the group began “a program that we believe will be stronger, safer and more principled in every way.”

Whether the faith-based group gains popularity in the coming months could signal how successful the Boy Scouts of America will be at keeping members when the new policy takes effect on Jan. 1, 2014. BSA members were deeply divided over the decision to allow gay teens, with many vowing to quit the program.

“I do feel strongly enough about the policy that I don’t want my kids there” in the Boy Scouts, said Jonathan Pickens, a California firefighter and father of three young boys who had not yet joined Scouting before the change in the membership guidelines. An Eagle Scout who has 22 years in the BSA with the troop that his dad founded, Pickens — who opposed lifting the ban on gay Scouts — would rather “take a little bit of a blind leap of faith and try to make this work.”

Religion. Painting itself into a smaller and smaller corner.

” Gay youth and adults can participate, but they cannot “flaunt” their sexuality, Stemberger said in July.”

I guess this means no Pride parades in the new organization!

AAAaaahahahahaha! That’s so awesome! That’s totally, completely, the most wrong thing they can do. Now they’re just a weird hate-group, as exclusion is THE defining trait. They’re not defining old institutions anymore, so that should change their strategy… pffft what idiots. The Hate Scouts. Basher Bootcamp.

The KKK has similar origins (yeah, it can be disputed). The Freemasons didn’t exclude based on race, so Albert Pike said screw it, I’ll start my own club, but instead of becoming a hermetic, quasi-academic order of power brokers and insider-traders, they turned into the illiterate freaks we see today.

Shall we start a betting-pool on the inevitable child abuse scandals that will occur? What kind of sex obsessed, sick fuck, with no innate moral compass would be a counselor or troop leader at hate camp? The average homophobe is better than that. These will be some deeply disturbed people. Someone call Chris Hansen, cuz this is going to be worse than the Catholic Church, Michael Jackson, GOP, or the BBC.

Oh, don’t we just love to live in our little Xtian bubble.Luxuriating in our righteousness and gazing out in contempt at people who are different.

I suppose they just want to feel safe when they are sleeping in tents out in the wilderness.

Just as long as they aren’t sleeping with any priests or pastors near by, far too many of them have been caught with their trousers down near children.

This will be a good thing for the Boy Scouts of America. Get the damned fundies who took over the organization over the last 3 decades to leave and not only will they start accepting gay scouts but also they’ll probably start accepting atheist scouts. Both of those bans were due to the fundie guard refusing to move with the times. The Girl Scouts already have moved into the modern age in this regard.

Ironically, I want this new group to be as successful as it possibly can be. The more successful it is the more the Boy Scouts benefit from the fundies leaving. It will never be large enough to threaten taking over from the Boy Scouts but it can siphon off the bigots.

I was just ready to ask this very same question – I knew someone MUST have brought it up already. It’s inevitable. I don’t know when, but it’s gonna happen.

Next a sub-section of KluKlux Clan scout faction with no gays and no blacks! That should teach the kids social co-operation with their fellow man through mutual respect!

““I’m very excited that we can be starting a new thing that’s historical in nature that will be talked about years from now as being a cultural shift,” he said. “People are drawing somewhat of a line in the sand, saying that we have something that we believe in, we have a right to associate with people that think the same way that we do.”

So I guess they are all republican, all believe in the same version of “god”, all make their toast the same way, all brush with the same toothpaste?

  • They will be on the wrong side of history, as religion usually is. Like the Creation “Museum”, this will be a flash in the pan – a bunch of interest at the start, but will fade out in a few years.

What’s wrong with the Boys Brigade, specifically a Christian international “rival” to Scouts? Robert Baden-Powell was an early vice-president of the Boys’ Brigade. He specifically set up Scouts as a movement to attract people of other faiths and nationalities. As a body intended to be more inclusive, not less.
