Fallen followers: Investigation finds 10 more dead children of faith healers

Peaceful Valley Cemetery sits on a windswept hill 30 miles east of Boise.

Some of The Followers of Christ faith healers bury their dead there.

The same last names appear over and again, going back decades. Some – like Beagley – are the same names you’ll see in a similar cemetery in Oregon City.

In 2010, jurors in Clackamas County convicted Jeff and Marci Beagley of letting their son Neal die of an untreated urinary tract infection.

KATU’s Dan Tilkin covered that story, as he has so many faith-healing stories. That’s why he traveled to Idaho to trace the connections between Followers members in both states, and a new trail of dead children.

A former member of the Followers of Christ advised him to go to Peaceful Valley and look for two specific names.

He found them. He found many more.

  1. It is a disgusting pride. I could see someone trying faith healing, but when it clearly did not work, they should give someone else a try rather than giving up. They had no evidence allopathic medicine would fail. Even if they thought the odds were slim, normally you try anything to save your child.

Perhaps they got some nutty idea god wanted the child to die and they had better not interfere.

At the least, when someone is caught doing this, the state should take any other kids away from them.

  2. Why do we tolerate murder by religion. Ignorance kills. Let’s stop teaching lies.

  3. This is disgusting, they deny these kids the chance to live a full and productive life because they think some imaginary being in the sky has some greater plan. Wake up! God isn’t there and it isn’t your right to do this to kids who look to for help and protection.

When will these people understand that faith healing never has and never will work?q

They’ll never acknowledge this. Confirmation bias guides their decisions and when a child dies it MUST be god’s will. What other reason could there be?

  5. I was reading the comments below this story and happened upon one that made me laugh out loud. (I cannot take credit ) though I wish I could. I’ll set it up: basically someone posed a rhetorical “what would jesus do?” and this person “Festivus” said:

Jesus would have collected all of the small children unto himself and redeemed them for valuable prizes.

I am still laughing. (I know that there is little room for levity when the topic is as macabre as this, but, well, it hit my funny bone).

  6. I had a bit of vomit come up in my mouth while reading this… why would the parents rights to practice whatever shitty religion they want override any child’s right to proper medical care?? Laws need to be changed and the so called parents prosecuted (how many of them are dying by the same rule i wonder?)

    Sickening for sure.

  7. “In the Name of God” a book by Cameron Stauth details many of the deaths due to medical negligence in Oregon by the Followers of Christ.

  8. The male parents should have their testicles removed. The female parents should have their ovaries removed. If their all powerful god wants them to have more kids he will of course prove this by reversing the surgery committed by mere man.

Is this what they mean when they say they are “pro-life”?

They’re only pro-life for the unborn. Once they are born and part of the living, they somehow figure they’re not worth caring about anymore. This story is truly shocking. The parents of those children need to be found, prosecuted and put in jail. Once there, they can pray all they want and witness their prayers remaining unanswered for the rest of their miserable lives.

Sorry for the rant but I have no tolerance for child abuse.

  10. What sane government allows “faith” healing? All other forms of abuse, torture and killing are illegal everywhere, why are ridiculous religious practices tolerated until someone dies??

    George Carlin quote: if you’re pre-born you’re fine, if you’re pre-school you’re f***ed.
