Dear Richard,
My story is somewhat different because I never had to leave a faith to begin with. When I was 5 years old, my sister showed me a book titled “All About Atoms”. It gave a simple explanation that all matter was composed of atoms, and that atoms are themselves composed of protons, electrons and neutrons. I thought this was great, and I was hooked on science from that day on. One day in Kindergarten, I was in a group of children having a discussion. One child asked, “what are we made of?”, to which I happily relied, Atoms. One very serious girl replied that I was wrong, that God made us out of clay. I immediately thought this was nonsense! Subsequent attempts at Catholic indoctrination failed. So an early “vaccination” of science has given me lifelong protection against religion!
