Saudi Arabia’s supreme court has upheld a sentence of 10 years in jail and 1,000 lashes against blogger Raif Badawi on charges of insulting Islam, his wife said on Sunday.

The judgement came despite worldwide outrage over his case and criticism from the United Nations, United States, the European Union, Canada and others.

“This is a final decision that is irrevocable,” Ensaf Haidar told AFP in a telephone interview from Canada. “This decision has shocked me.”

Badawi received the first 50 of the 1,000 lashes he was sentenced to outside a mosque in the Red Sea city of Jeddah on January 9. Subsequent rounds of punishment were postponed on medical grounds.

Amnesty International slammed the “abhorrent” decision to uphold a “cruel and unjust sentence,” describing it as a “dark day for freedom of expression.”

This is the mentality of Islam, do anything that we deem offensive and we will take pleasure in beating seven shades of shit out of you. To think that its adherents say that it is a religion of peace, not a fucking chance.

  • Saudi Justice in action.

The learned Saudi Justices hear about some sort of outrage in the west about beating a man to death slowly, because he was a blasphemer. Bloody westerners. OK we wait a couple of months and then we proceed with the sentence anyway. No-one will notice by now.

Just as a matter of interest, has anyone counted the number of flies in that jail ? Nothing like a fresh wound to attract a fly !

    Bastards !

  • Actually this is the mentality of our good friends the Saudis. Proponents of an extreme form of Islam called Salafism.

Funders of horrendous hate preachers who leave moderate Muslim parents in Europe bereft as their children flock to a style of dress and backward looking morality they’d long since abandoned. Funders of IS and it’s well presented marketing efforts that attract gullible youngsters.

Upholders of the London property market and those profiting from it.

Suppliers of cheap oil to the West as long as we don’t pry to closely into their records on human rights,

And of course valued customers of our arms markets.

They say money is the root of all evil, but I would have to say religion could potentially win that distinction when you see barbarity of this magnitude, and it’s just one instance among millions really. Seems we are seeing a new dark age develop in the middle east, but sometimes I wonder if it ever left the region.

More than 600 new victims of female genital mutilation (FGM) have been identified in seven months in the West Midlands.

Hospital statistics revealed there were 632 new cases between September 2014 and March 2015, a report from the West Midlands Police and Crime Panel said.

Between January and November last year 118 cases were referred to the West Midlands force.

A new task force to tackle mutilation was being launched, the panel said.

A regional task force would ensure “better co-ordination of agencies” to eradicate the practice, which has been illegal in Britain for 30 years, the panel said.

The report said: “We call upon all relevant authorities, including those involved in law enforcement, the justice system and public health, to do everything in their power to protect young girls from this life-endangering, health-threatening crime.”

**There had been no reports to West Midlands Police of mutilation in the area but there had been some intelligence to suggest girls “are brought to Birmingham to be cut”, the panel said.*
