If you ever need proof of what happens when you allow the twisted world of religion to destroy your entire thought processes then welcome to Mike Huckabee. Religious fanaticism has taken over to such an extent that he has gotten it into his head that an abortion would have be worse for this tragic girl. To think that this sick fucker wants to run America, if he did then all hope would truly be lost.

  • Mike Huckabee has defended the internationally condemned decision not to allow a Paraguayan 11-year-old child to have an abortion after she was raped by her stepfather.

My heart goes out to this poor girl. She is a victim of her stepfather, her ultraconservative patriarchal society and of cruel selfish misogynists like Huckabee. Forcing that girl to carry the fetus to term and to raise it for the rest of her life is sadistic. I hope the girl can find a way to escape from her predatory step father.

If Huckabee can be caught participating in an act of “perversion” and put on display to the public as an absolute hypocrite I will be dancing in the streets.

  • It’s people like Huckabee who make me very glad I’m British not American because I’d be embarrassed to live in a country where there are so many right wing religious nutjobs like him. Thankfully he has no chance of being elected president and is no longer in such a position of power as state governor but he’s still one of the most dangerous men in America due to the views he espouses and the political support he commands.

I remember when he released that awful family photo several years ago of his own great fat lard arse sitting on a bench and his two even more obese sons in the same striped shirts stood behind him. The gleaming “money no object” orthodontically manufactured smiles and the rolls of fat bulging from every seam. It personified everything the third and much of the second world must hate about the USA. Rampant capitalism and overconsumption and to hell with the planet. You don’t see many fat people in poor countries. They can’t afford that much food.

This is the man who slammed Beyonce for her sexuality but was happy to play guitar with Ted Nugent to racist sexist lyrics. But of course women have to be docile and subservient says the buybull. Men can do what the hell they want. The man who supported Josh Duggar for sexually molesting his sisters because he’s repented now and Jebus has forgiven him. Only it turns out Mr Duggar didn’t repent all that hard about his carnal lusts because he’s also now been outed as a member of the Ashley Madison cheating spouse website. Leopards and spots I suppose.

Here’s what I think about abortion Mr Huckabee. I think most “normal” civilised countries have got it right. It’s the woman’s choice, at least up to a certain stage in the pregancy and fat religious nutjobs should stay out of it. However I’ll make an exception about the trimester rules in your case. Google says you’re 60 years old and I think your own abortion is exactly 60 years overdue. [Last sentence removed by moderator to bring within Terms of Use.]

  • Ok, I’ve had my little rant, got that off my chest, now for a slightly more serious note. If the lives of fetuses are so damn important to Mr Huckabee why are the lives of actual children not even more so? Not just the poor girl who was raped but the millions who die every year from lack of food or basic medicine. Just the excess consumption that led to your own bloated body and those of your obese sons could have fed a third world family. The money that America wastes on its military and in conducting illegal wars could solve the food and medical shortages of the entire third world.

The money that Americans spend on pointless hand guns could buy malaria and HIV treatment for the whole of Africa. I doubt if such issues disturb either Mr Huckabee’s sleep or his mealtimes very much though.

Well, truth be told…I’m definitely post-pubescent. I’ve produced three offspring to prove it.

For goodness sake! Why didn’t you post that over on the sexual dysfunction thread?! You could have saved all of us American women from a lifetime of pathologically low sex drive. Hmmm. I was wondering if maybe the French guys’ accents might be more effective in that way.

  • Akrid: what the heck is with this nonsense? First, you’re not as much of a Romeo as you think you are, especially if you have to make such sleazy comments. Secondly, you imply that certain women are your playthings, that they can be disempowered when you come onto the scene. Thirdly, try not to overrate yourself at the expense of cheapening the independent-mindedness of others.

    No jellies for you, guv’ner.

  • As a UK feline I can confirm that the british term “quivering jelly” refers to a state of incapacitation caused by hysterical and inappropriate laughter (e.g. when someone is trying to come across as sexually desriable but is in fact as sexy as Sid James but unaware that Barbera Windsor was paid hansomely to pretend to be aroused by a late-middle aged balding man cackling at his own peurile sexism, but you try to suppress an all out guffaw to save his embarrasment). us brits do it to you american ladies all the time I’m told.

  • This is what our US christians would put into law: anti-abortion, anti-evolution, anti-sex, anti-contraception, anti-dancing, pro war, and anti anything that disagreed with their interpretations of the bible. Even now one cannot be elected president unless he/she repeatedly says “God bless the United States of America.”

  • Whatever the evidently twisted and warped, evolution denier, Mike Huckabee might say, what does our, relatively new, and “progressive” Pope have to say about this 10 year old girl when raped by her stepfather, and giving birth because an abortion was not allowed ? Is that nothing I hear ? Not even a wee whisper ? Oh yes, now I hear it clearly ! It’s the sound of Monty Python singing Every Sperm is Sacred.

The sheer bog of confusion that religion causes in some peoples’ thinking processes is almost beyond belief. Huckabee makes Rick Perry look intelligent !

  • From the article Huckabee:

He recently admitted to being “open” to the idea of using federal troops to stop women from having abortions at clinics in the US, because “all Americans should be protected”.

Perhaps he should have the troops patrol heaven seeing as “God” causes more abortions through “natural causes” than all of the abortion clinics in the world ?

  • We used to have some truly pious and humble believing Christians here who actually tried a lot harder to “follow” Jesus but most were ran out of the country or bullied into obscurity by the sick ultra-nationalist war-and-violence mongering brand of Christian we have today. e.g. Jehovah’s Witnesses (creepy though they may be), Quakers, Hutterites, Anabaptists, and others are just a fraction of what they once were, after persecution for refusing to serve in WWII, Korea, or Vietnam, objecting to coerced Pledges of Allegiance to the State, rejected ultra-nationalism that placed allegiances to the flag or state above their god, etc.

Hate about the USA? The article is about the outrageous views of Mike Huckabee and other bigots of his ilk found in every country on the face of the earth. If you hate the USA come out and say it. Why hide behind proverbial allies in “the third and much of the second world” when we watch a jihadist with a British accent saw off the head of a helpless captive in the ISIS caliphate. Stand up and be accountable, man. If you hate the USA, an entire nation of 312 million people, stand up and say it with the disclaimer that you are speaking for yourself.

  • The US abortion rate is similar to those of Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden but higher than those of other Western European countries (NAF).
In 2005, the abortion rate in the United States was higher than recent rates reported for Canada and Western European countries and lower than rates reported for China, Cuba, the majority of Eastern European countries, and certain Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union (CDC).

Abortion is a difficult subject for coherent discussion because, for obvious reasons, it lends itself to so many controversial perspectives burdened with so much historical, cultural and religious baggage. Current trends suggest that younger generations – ascending from under age 40- will increasingly support elective abortion. Michael Huckabee, age 60, still represents the traditional, sometimes virulent, die-hard old guard fighting to overturn Roe v. Wade. The last wave of social conservative reaction embodied in aging baby-boom piety sullied with considerable viciousness is about to crest before these geezers go babbling off in the sunset of their 70s and 80s.

I suspect the future of clinical abortion will be truncated by a new generation of popular abortifacients – drugs which sexually active women can take in the privacy of their own homes to evacuate the products of conception into toilets. Abortions requiring a clinical setting will diminish in number and enjoy undistressed acceptance by the vast majority of the population who will protect patients from the yapping idiocy of graying protesters.

  • I wouldn’t go quite so far as to say Huckabee makes Perry look intelligent. That really does take some doing and only a select few like Sarah Palin have managed it so far. In fact what makes Huckabee so dangerous is that he is intelligent, has a good speaking voice, knows not to rant or lose his temper, manages to sound as if he’s being perfectly reasonable most of the time albeit when still coming out with really vile sentiments. Fortunately he and his base will be gone in due course as a more progressive generation arise. We are hearing the death rattle of religious conservatism and the bigotry, sexism, racism and homophobia that goes along with it.

Many Americans do have a thing about regional accents.
When my daughter took a gap-year job with an American law firm, she spent half her time, (with her educated Anglo-Scottish accent), on the front desk reception of the Wall Street office, – giving the firm an international flavour!

    Pinball1970 says:

    This beggers belief.

Crime one, a child of 10 is raped, crime two, the child is forced to put her immature (and scarred I would have thought both literal and metaphorical) body and mind through a pregnancy.

Crime three, the child will find out that his mother was 10 when he / she was conceived via an attack by a paedophile.

Two and three could have been avoided and with decent care counselling and love, the scars from the ordeal could have been healed or lessened given time.

Life is precious, belongs to god, etc, has been seen and used before to ill effect and here is another example of Christians putting that stupid book before common decency, common sense and reasoned civilized behaviour.

  • There is actually one thing I really do dislike quite intensely. It’s when people don’t debate what you actually said but invent something you didn’t and then rail against that instead.

Akrid: Thank you for demanding such high standards. Now we can return to discussing the topic.

Abortion has been taboo in most human societies for most of history. Abortions have always been practiced along with infanticide, but severe sanctions both moral and legal have predominated as the norm because the de facto taking of an innocent human life was believed to be the consequence. Michael Huckabee represents this traditional view held by millions in aging cohorts while supporting currently deplorable social and state interventions to “save the baby’s life.”

Huckabee appeals to an apparently intuitive norm that has undergone rapid revision in social consciousness in the decades since WWII, especially the last 50 years. In the past, often illegal and always crude abortions carried high risks of infection and maternal mortality. The woman bore the shame and guilt, the lifelong trauma, of going to extraordinary lengths to kill the child living in her own body. Medical advances transformed the procedure into a safe simple operation. As access to safe legal abortion became widespread, termination of pregnancy, optimally in the earliest stages, became a popular alternative to bearing an unwanted child. Simultaneously reproductive biology informed a new consensus that a fetus was not a baby, a child, a human being. The baby-murder taboo reversed when women and men could think about removing the virtually insentient fetal tissue from the womb in the early stages before the development of a brain or nervous system. Mentioned in the comment above, abotifacients -ingested drugs- could expel the products of conception foregoing even minimally evasive clinical abortions.

The pro-life position will always enjoy some philosophical justification because no one can dispute that life in its reproductive stages from the moment of conception lies along a continuum. No one can dispute that at some point on that continuum, the fetal life crosses a line into a developed human being. The ascendant pro-choice consensus avoids the futile exercise of parsing the exact moment where that line lies on the continuum by advocating that elective abortion be performed in the earliest possible stage of pregnancy when the embryo or incipient fetus cannot be considered to be a human being by any scientific criteria.

  • Just for the record I am also anti-abortion in most cases. There are exceptions, and this is certainly one of them. I don’t think any woman wants to set out to have an abortion.

I am not a Christian and I am not religious, but I am pro life, but this schoolgirl should not have to have gone through what she has been forced to, plus the added problem of a child bringing up a child. What happened to the stepfather rapist ? Was he given 50 Hail Marys and a nudge and a wink ?

    but I am pro life,

I think the term “pro-life” has been hi-jacked by religious anti-abortionists, anti-stem-cell campaigners etc.

Most of their thinking is based on “soul dogma”, and shows no understanding of what constitutes life, sentient life, or cell biology.

Any aspects of biology have simply been cut and pasted on to their dogmas, in attempts to add credibility, or to try to blind opponents with science, or with obscurantist semantic shifting meanings of words.
The term “pro-life”, is therefore emotive, vague, meaningless, and its use is unhelpful in analysing the real issues (such as for whose life the claim is “pro”).

As you indicate, the merits of particular abortions, should be thought through, to depend on the particular individual and family interests involved, the consequential demands on the people concerned, and the impacts of predicted outcomes.

We should not lose sight of the dilemma in the abortion debate that there are deeply religious people who support pro choice. We have no trouble finding Catholic women who have had an abortion. On the other hand there are secular folks who oppose abortion on moral, conscientious and rational grounds. DArcy seems to be striking a middle ground with his ambivalence.

Because “life” in the reproductive stages develops along a nine-month continuum, reasonable people should favor elective abortion at the earliest stage possible. Civilized societies can easily implement abortion education and services that relegate late[r] term abortions largely to the category of medical necessity.

Beyond encouraging women who want abortions to have them early, I believe a civilized society should encourage women who functionally and/or emotionally do not want the child they will be bringing to term to opt for abortion after informed consent with societal approval devoid of societal stigma.

Where abortions are needed, the earlier the better. With proper contraception and “morning after” emergency contraception, numbers should be low.

The dogma-nuts, can be easily separated from the rational ethical thinkers, by the fact that they usually oppose contraception, emergency contraception (which avoids the need for later abortions), abortion, and related issues such as work on stem-cells, while making silly claims about preserving all zygotes and blastocysts.

They also shout about “life” but usually have negligible understanding of its properties. “Soul-preservation” also frequently features in their priorities and in their definition of “life”, often to the neglect of considerations of effects and demands on the humans involved.

I usually put a reference link, so people at least have the chance to gain understanding of what they are talking about.

I couldn’t agree more. The main alterior motive for opposition to “artificial birth control” by the early church was the condemnation of human sexuality for sinful pleasure, or more precisely the satisfaction of LUST, unmindful of reproduction within the sacrament of Holy Matrimony. (The rhythm method was a concession to “Lust Lite” on the condition that the married couple welcome any chance of conception.) To this day, you still hear older people characterize unwanted pregnancy outside of marriage as a just punishment for the sin of sexual dalliance that must be endured.
