Repeal Islam’s scarlet-letter sex laws

The massacre of partygoers at Pulse, a gay club in Orlando, took me back to the late summer of 2005, when an African American woman, wearing a tight headscarf over her staff uniform, stormed out of the kitchen and into a conference room at an Atlanta Holiday Inn, shouting: “You’re all going to burn in hell!”

I froze. Around me were about 50 brave souls from Al-Fatiha, a gay American Muslim organization, many of them young men secretly at the organization’s annual conference while their parents attended a meeting of the conservative Islamic Society of North America. That weekend, I prayed shoulder to shoulder with them — a gay man leading us in prayer, a transgender Muslim beside me.

I’m a straight Muslim feminist, but, like my friends at Al-Fatiha, I’m a criminal, too, in the view of many Islamic clerics today. My crime under conservative sharia law: giving birth to a baby boy 13 years ago while single.

  • @OP – when an African American woman, wearing a tight headscarf over her staff uniform, stormed out of the kitchen and into a conference room at an Atlanta Holiday Inn, shouting: “You’re all going to burn in hell!”

Ah! The shared Christian and Islamic “Hell Delusion”, which afflicts the deeply indoctrinated, and makes then a hazard and a nuisance to the rest of humanity!

  • Puritanical Islamic sex laws feature a hierarchy of punishment, based on the Koran and the sunnah, or sayings and traditions of the prophet Muhammad, of stoning to death for those who are married and have sex outside of their marriages and “100 stripes,” or lashes, for premarital sex

Ms Nomani writes well and is obviously educated and informed. Although not gay herself, she supports LGBT people in their struggle for freedom, which indicates that she has empathy and commitment. She acknowledges that the grotesque sexual repression in Islam comes from its holy books, either dictated by god to Mohammad (Koran) or collected by the Prophet’s followers after his death (Sunnah and Hadith).
What I do not understand is how someone who wishes to discard important teachings from the fundamental texts of her religion, and who moreover can understand the evil which they contain and generate, can possibly continue practicing as a member, or believing in the truth of the Faith. This is surely cognitive dissonance of a high order.

A court in Qatar has convicted a Dutch woman of having sex outside marriage after she told police she was raped.

The 22-year-old was handed a suspended sentence and fined $824 (£580). She will also be deported.

Her lawyer said her drink had been spiked at a Doha hotel in March and she had woken up in a stranger’s flat, where she realised she had been raped.

Her alleged attacker, who said the sex was consensual, was sentenced to 100 lashes for having sex outside marriage.

He will be given a further 40 lashes for consuming alcohol.

The woman has been detained since making the allegation three months ago, but her case only came to light over the weekend when her family decided to go public.

Court officials said she would be deported once the fine was paid.

The woman was arrested by Qatari police immediately after reporting that she had been raped on the night of 15 March, as was the alleged assailant.

During a holiday in the emirate, she went out with a friend for drinks at a hotel where the sale of alcohol was permitted, according to her lawyer Brian Lokollo.

“She went dancing but when she returned to the table after the first sip of her drink, she realised someone had added something to her glass,” he said.

The woman did not feel very well and she later woke alone in an unfamiliar flat and “realised to her great horror that she had been raped”, Mr Lokollo added.

These indoctrinated delusional people really can’t cope with the concepts of sex and consent!

  • Victim blaming is par for the course. It’s her fault for being female. He wouldn’t have raped her if she wasn’t.

But I think her real crime was complaining about it to the police. Clearly rapists rule Qatar. No other explanation rings true.
