Jewish Democrats express doubts that US is ready for atheist president

Jewish Democrats have widely condemned a party official’s email that sought to question Bernie Sanders’ religious faith. They insist that the issue is irrelevant to how they cast their vote, though they are doubtful as to whether the US is ready to elect its first atheist president.

Emails released by WikiLeaks show that Brad Marshall, chief financial officer of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), considered raising the question of whether Sanders is an atheist in the hope of costing him votes in the primary contest against Hillary Clinton.

“It may make no difference but for KY and WVA [West Virginia] can we get someone to ask his belief,” Marshall, who has since apologised, wrote in an email on 5 May. “He had skated on having a Jewish heritage. I read he is an atheist. This could make several points difference with my peeps. My Southern Baptist peeps would draw a big difference between a Jew and an atheist.”

  • “There are many highly committed Jews who are atheists including some of the founders of the state of Israel.”

And not only Israel. Many of the founders of the US were atheists, or perhaps deists, which is much the same thing. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan was also (almost certainly) an atheist.

For my whole adult life I’ve been doubtful that I’d live to see a black American President and I never thought I’d live long enough to see a woman President either. I’m so happy to be wrong on both counts. Hooray! I’m so very wrong!! An atheist President seems like a piece of cake to me now. This is all about perspective!

I read he is an atheist. This could make several points difference with my peeps.

As usual, let’s consider the source of this statement.

It probably would make a difference to the Southern Baptists, Evangelicals and every other assorted type of delusional nitwit in this place in a really bad way but I can’t help but wonder what would have happened had they gone on the attack against Sanders for being an atheist. What would our young people have done when the reactionary Baptists who want to move us all back into the dark ages started insulting the well loved Bernie? It would have set the younger generation on fire, that’s my guess. I do believe that the numbers show that the youngest voters are unchurched and checked out of religion in sharply increasing numbers. These numbers are on our side and on Bernie’s side as well.

Of course the practicing Jews and Baptists see Bernie’s lack of religion to be frightening and embarrassing. That’s a product of their own indoctrination. They are projecting their own fear onto everyone else. But let’s not assume that all secular Americans and especially our large numbers of secular young people would agree with them. I’ll just bet that they are relieved to be spared the stupid utterances of “God bless you and God bless America” etc. etc. every five minutes out of our politicians’ pandering mouths.

It’s so ridiculously overplayed that the image from V For Vendetta comes to my mind where a typical family is sitting in their living room watching state propaganda on their TV with their kid next to them. Some kind of stupid bullshit statement is said by a talking head and the parents, out of visual range of their kid, look at each other with expressions of disbelief and disgust. They were cognizant of the con game that was being force fed to them through the media. How many American living rooms have the same scenario playing in them night after night?

Bernie’s campaign was a great lesson to us. That someone with socialist leanings got this far in the American political system is so surprising – nay – shocking! that I now doubt that voters would bat an eyelash at his “admission” of being a deist or spiritual or atheist at all.

I guess we’ll never know how this would have played out but I can’t help but wish it really did happen. How else can we know where the country is really at? Still, even though he never said the A word, he didn’t deny it either and his fans obviously didn’t give a damn and maybe they actually respected him for his honesty on this matter.

This is something that I wish Obama had been more assertive about. I just don’t believe the guy is religious but he pandered to them well enough. The current bunch of candidates, except for Sanders, are doing the same. Bernie would have opened the door to a more secular American government.

The most terrifying thing for a god-delusion, is the notion that people can live healthy, happy, lives without god-delusions! – Especially if there is a risk that THEIR host human will discover this and dump them!

Aggressive defensive action is immediately called for, with active control of the host human, and immediate diversionary emotional and fear responses needed, to blank out the threatening communications.
This should trigger repetitive reassertion of servility, in the mind-slave, with the urgent need for a mental comfort-blanket re-instilled!!
To a god-delusion blasphemy is treason!
