Can an atheist lead a Protestant church? A battle over religion in Canada.

OTTAWA — The Rev. Gretta Vosper is a dynamic, activist minister with a loyal following at her Protestant congregation in suburban Toronto. She is also an outspoken atheist.

“We don’t talk about God,” Vosper said in an interview, describing services at her West Hill United Church, adding that it’s time the church gave up on “the idolatry of a theistic god.”

Vosper’s decision to reject God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit and to turn her church into a haven for nonbelievers “looking for a community that will help them create meaningful lives without God” has become too much even for the liberal-minded United Church of Canada.

  • Can an astronomer teach astrology?

Yes, but that’s not really an analogous question in any case

The real question is either should an astronomer teach astrology (to which the better answer is “no”), or why would a person looking for astrological guidance go to an astronomer who isn’t inclined to use astrology (to which the answer is “I don’t know”)?

  • I started writing this response not understanding the intentions of Rev. Gretta Vosper in terms of the continuance of the church she supposedly represents yet rejects. If Gretta is an atheist, fine. If Gretta wants to establish a place where a community of atheists can socially meet, again, fine. But why do it under the false umbrella of a religion that you don’t believe in anymore?

Then I thought, ‘perhaps this is part of a process that could help indoctrinated people ween off the teet of god?’
Perhaps one of the reasons why people won’t leave their religion is because they have experienced a sense of community within it and don’t know how to replace that? If Gretta can allow people to keep that sense of community whilst removing the element of god, then perhaps she is providing a ‘half-way house’ that will eventually lead to those people realising that they do not need to believe in a deity to have a social life?

    Can an astronomer teach astrology?

Perhaps the question should be be:
” Can an astronomer teach the followers of astrology actual scientific astronomy?”
