Question of the Week 4-25-17

Apr 25, 2017

Big marches and rallies mean more clever signs! The Verge, BuzzFeed, and other outlets have been highlighting their favorite signs and displays from the March for Science. Which do you think were the best?

Best comment wina a copy of Brief Candle in the Dark by Richard Dawkins!

  • My favourite is : “I AM WITH HER” (and a drawing of Earth),
than : “Science saved my life (and yours)”
and this is funny with a nice point: “Only atoms are allowed to just make stuff up!”

So many of them that makes the point and are at the same time witty, but for me this “I AM WITH HER” summarize it all. So simple and powerful from my point of view. 🙂

  • A lot of very good ones. I like:

    “Make Reality Great Again”

That’s very clever and says a lot.

(I am deeply worried about the cuts to funding for the arts, by the way. I hope there is an art march too.)

Me too. That reminds me of a nice speach given by Meryl Streep at Golden Globe awards this year. , when she says (after second minute):

…and if we kick them all out we will have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, WHICH ARE NOT THE ARTS!!!

That was great I thought, because I share the same opinion. There is this expression “arts” in english language (maybe in some others also) concerning some sports like here. We do not have word ART associated with it. We do not have word ART associated with any sport in general. We have an expression for that kind of sport, when translated in english means “combat skils”. I would like to see in America and all the countries around the world famous artists on the streets (actors, painters, musicians, poets, etc.).

Sometimes it bothers me that artists in show business (in my country anyway) do not speak freely their mind about politics and politicians that are responsible for social consequences (actually, precisely for irresponsibility of those psychopats). 🙁

  • There were so many to choose from!!!

    Here are some I like!

    Make America smart again!

At the start of every disaster movie there’s a scientist being ignored!

I’ve seen smarter cabinets at IKEA.

“Science” – basically an inoculation against charlatans!

“Rid Our Government of Fossil Fools.” -Vicki #11 Apr 22, 2017 at 2:53 pm

I would also suggest one of my own – should anyone wish to use it:-

Lubricate with coal dust, and make America GRATE again!

    I can’t believe I’m marching for facts!

The Universe is made of electrons, protons, and MORONS!

SCIENCE – because you can’t just make (shit) up!

ICE has no agenda – It just melts!

TRUMP’S THEORY OF RELATIVITY – hire all my relatives!

    Dog – wearing a placard:- “I’m a cat” #alternative facts (*citation needed)

Science is real – the President is FAKE!

    Science cures “alternative facts”.

The cartoon showing a street-corner with massive crowd marching for Science and a bedraggled handful of Trumpists marching for “alternative facts”, was also good.

There were also some very good quotes:

“In a time of deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act” -(George Orwell)

“I would rather have questions which can’t be answered, than answers which can’t be questioned” (Richard Feynman)

  • There are so many good signs to choose from that it seems impossible to do so! There was so much witty intellect at those marches! It makes me feel proud to be part of the cause. I simply can’t disagree with any of the choices in this comments section so far! As for my own, though, I saw a woman wearing a simple eye area covering mask, a shirt with an atom on it with earth in the middle of it and she was holding a sign that said “Science Needs Heroes”. With all of the wit and humor put into most of the signs, which I loved, that one hit home with me and gave me the chills a little, and although I didn’t know her, made me feel proud of her for stepping up and being the hero science needs right now. By the way. @Vicki and Phil. I don’t know if you recall, but I happened to answer the question of the week about the Hubble deep field images recently. You two, along with some others, paid me some very kind compliments, and I wanted to let you know they didn’t go unnoticed or unappreciated. Thank you, they actually made my day and meant a great deal to me 🙂 Also Phil, your post was beautiful that week. “I loved running through trees following the moon into a clearing and though standing stock still knowing I was still flying through space in utter silence on a rock like that.” I loved that. I actually read your post several times. Thank you guys!
