Saudi Crown Prince Must Use Promotion To End Raif Badawi’s Prison Ordeal, Wife Says

Jun 28, 2017

By Jack Moore

The wife of Saudi writer and blogger Raif Badawi, Haider, has called on the newly appointed Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman to “write a new history,” release prisoners of conscience and end her husband’s ordeal, in an exclusive interview with Newsweek.

Last week marked five years since Saudi Arabia jailed Badawi for advocating greater freedoms in the Gulf Kingdom. Badawi was charged with “insulting Islam” in 2014 after his arrest in 2012 for publishing liberal blog posts in a country where ultraconservative Islamic law and censorship rule supreme.

His sentence was 10 years in prison and 1,000 lashes, of which he received 50 in January 2015. He was due to receive the lashes weekly in a public square in Jeddah, but they were halted for medical reasons.

  • I think there are some misconceptions regarding his arrest. He is not a prisoner of conscience of course. The most important thing is he will go through a fair trail like anybody else in the kingdom.

    Prisoner of conscience
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

He is not a prisoner of conscience of course.

Prisoner of conscience (POC) is a term coined by Peter Benenson in a 28 May 1961 article (“The Forgotten Prisoners”) for the London Observer newspaper. Most often associated with the human rights organisation Amnesty International, the term can refer to anyone imprisoned because of their race, sexual orientation, religion, or political views. It also refers to those who have been imprisoned and/or persecuted for the non-violent expression of their conscientiously held beliefs.

Why do you think that Badawi is not a prisoner of conscience?

he will go through a fair trail like anybody else in the kingdom.

Fair trial? There’s nothing fair about anything that happens in that place. The fact that he was arrested and publicly flogged is in the first place unfair and barbaric. The only human beings on the face of this earth that think the treatment of Badawi is fair are the humans that are brainwashed up to their necks in the cruelty that is Islam. Saudi Arabia is one thousand years behind the rest of the world in morality. The world is holding its breath in anticipation of the day that the oil runs dry. Then the place will dry up and blow away like a tumbleweed disappearing into the dunes of the miserable desert.

I don’t think there is much chance of that, given the background of Saudi politics and theocracy!

Saudi Arabia is the chief foreign promoter of Islamist extremism in the UK, a new report has claimed.

The Henry Jackson Society said there was a “clear and growing link” between Islamist organisations in receipt of overseas funds, hate preachers and Jihadist groups promoting violence.

The foreign affairs think tank called for a public inquiry into the role of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations.

The UK’s Saudi Arabian embassy says the claims are “categorically false”.

Meanwhile, ministers are under pressure to publish their own report on UK-based Islamist groups.

The Home Office report into the existence and influence of Jihadist organisations, commissioned by former Prime Minister David Cameron in 2015, has reportedly yet to be completed amid questions as to whether it will ever be published.

Critics have suggested it could make uncomfortable reading for the government, which has close and longstanding diplomatic, security and economic links with the Gulf, particularly Saudi Arabia.

BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner said he understood the report was “largely finished and sitting on Theresa May’s desk”, but there was probably a reluctance to publish it because of “embarrassing” content.

The Henry Jackson Society is a foreign policy think tank that advocates the robust spreading of liberal democracy, the rule of law and the market economy.

Their report says a number of Gulf nations, as well as Iran, are providing financial support to mosques and Islamic educational institutions which have played host to extremist preachers and been linked to the spread of extremist material.

At the top of the list, the report claims, is Saudi Arabia, the UK’s closest ally in the Middle East and biggest trading partner.

It alleges individuals and foundations have been heavily involved in exporting what it calls “an illiberal, bigoted Wahhabi ideology”, quoting a number of examples.

In a minority of cases, the report alleges institutions in the UK that receive Saudi funding are run directly from Saudi Arabia, although in most instances the money appears to “simply buy foreign donors’ influence”.

This of course highlights the stupidity of Trump’s travel ban excluding Saudi Arabia, and his promotion of huge arms sales to Saudi for its wars and sponsored terrorism against rival Shia neighbours!

  • There is a dispute heating up between Saudi and Canada. CNN video:

While Badawi is in prison in Saudi, his wife and children are in Canada with citizenship via asylum visa. Raif Badawi’s sister is in prison for human rights activism as well.

Check the tweet in the VOX article above. It is presented as being from Saudi government. “Infographics”. Is this really from the government? If so it’s a terrible threat.

It’s those darned women rebelling against requiring permission from their guardian fathers or husbands to travel or seek employment! :

The Canadians had the nerve to criticise this, so Saudi has taken action to defend the sacred principles of Islam from interfering heretics 🙂

I await the howls of “Canadian Islamophobia” from those ducking any rational arguments about the issues!

Give me a break! Is there anyone so oblivious that they would throw women’s rights activists and a Muslim apostate under the bus just so they won’t offend the delicate sensibilities of the Saudi Arabian government? The very activists who need help from the West the most! These people risk their lives every day for women and for us secular folk. The tweet of an Air Canada plane aimed at that Canadian tower is an outrage.
