By Julia Manchester

At least 200 individuals with backgrounds in science, math, engineering and technology have launched bids for state House seats across the country, according to HuffPost.

The number marks the largest number of scientists to run for office in modern history.

  1. I hope this is the beginning of a more general recognition of science (and

education) as the only hope for the continuance of civilisation, such as it is.

Scientists in government are sorely needed here in the UK, where organised

superstition underlies Conservative party policies and agendas. The promotion of

divisive state ‘faith’ schools, self-serving economic ideologies, the involvement of

ethic-negating corporate power in state regulated bodies…, all of these overseen by

a cabinet which lacks any understanding of what enabled the startlingly rapid

growth of the nation in the first place.

I have heard the witless Michael Gove described as a Tory intellectual! Their

average IQ seems unlikely to be high. His successor at the Department for

Education, Nicky Morgan, was asked by a schoolchild “what is the cube root of

125?” She didn’t know and couldn’t work it out.

  2. I see battle lines being drawn between people who know stuff and people who own stuff.

We need an ever more educated populace to make the obviously better call.
