Record number of scientists running for office in 2018

By Julia Manchester

At least 200 individuals with backgrounds in science, math, engineering and technology have launched bids for state House seats across the country, according to HuffPost.

The number marks the largest number of scientists to run for office in modern history.

The PAC 314 Action told the outlet that the candidates were running in elections for 7,000 state legislature seats.

“The sheer number is really astonishing,” the group’s founder, Shaughnessy Naughton, told the outlet.

The PAC’s membership expanded from 4,000 to 400,000 in 2017.

  1. I hope this is the beginning of a more general recognition of science (and

education) as the only hope for the continuance of civilisation, such as it is.

Scientists in government are sorely needed here in the UK, where organised

superstition underlies Conservative party policies and agendas. The promotion of

divisive state ‘faith’ schools, self-serving economic ideologies, the involvement of

ethic-negating corporate power in state regulated bodies…, all of these overseen by

a cabinet which lacks any understanding of what enabled the startlingly rapid

growth of the nation in the first place.

I have heard the witless Michael Gove described as a Tory intellectual! Their

average IQ seems unlikely to be high. His successor at the Department for

Education, Nicky Morgan, was asked by a schoolchild “what is the cube root of

125?” She didn’t know and couldn’t work it out.

  2. I see battle lines being drawn between people who know stuff and people who own stuff.

We need an ever more educated populace to make the obviously better call.

  3. Because a soy boy wearing a pussy hat while holding a cringe inducing sign is the best way to get people into science. What the fuck. Does dawkins know about this? These asshurt leftists are not the future of science. They are drug-addled degenerates. Please post an actual scientist to go along with article before you scare too many people away

  4. Wow, that’s quite a speech. But I agree with everything you say.
I don’t like red either. I would never wear red. No one should wear red. It’s just asking to be called gay.
And the leftists really should be silenced. Dawkins would agree with you.
All the people on the left are drug addicts. Everyone knows it.
I had a guy tell me that once.

  5. 314 Action is also endorsing Suneel Gupta, a systems architect and former executive at Mozilla and Groupon, who is running for Michigan’s 11th District seat. His campaign bills him as the “first tech candidate in the industrial Midwest.”

He’s running to replace Rep. David Trott, a Republican attorney nicknamed the “foreclosure king”

A big part of the problem is in the media, who like to write sensational stories, about attention-seeking political idiots, their silly “controversial” stunts and moronic fantasist ideological pronouncements! That seriously complicated administrative and sciency stuff, goes straight over their heads!

Quite a few years ago, I worked on campaigns for a Labour MP, who was a graduate electronics engineer.

He was the founding chairman of the Parliamentary ICT Committee, Chair of the committee which drew up the School Standards Framework Act, and a Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons.

You have probably never heard of him!

Because a soy boy wearing a pussy hat

I’m not sure the fashion police have much to contribute to science!
The picture looks rather like a university student to me!

while holding a cringe inducing sign is the best way to get people into science.

Flasks of chemicals are used in science, and Science IS Real – unlike the “alternative facts”, promoted by the Christian Right, White-House Trumpies and biologically or meteorological illiterate, elected Republicans, who regularly make fools of themselves on scientific and medical issues!

  8. @#10 – the founding chairman of the [1997 upgraded] Parliamentary ICT Committee

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parliamentary_Information_Technology_Committee

In 1997 John McWilliam MP (a Deputy Speaker) took over as chairman. He was also a Director of EURIM and decided which activities should be routed through EURIM and which through PITCOM. Thus the meetings to help organise the scrutiny of the legislation that created Ofcom

You have probably never heard of him!
