Onward, Christian soldiers: Right-wing religious nationalists launch dramatic new power play

It’s just beginning to dawn on folks how much Donald Trump’s presidency relies on religious support. All the scandals surrounding Trump have brought intense attention to the 81 percent support he received from evangelical Christians in the 2016 election. New research by Andrew Whitehead, meanwhile, explicates such support in the context of Christian nationalism, and historian John Fea has written an important new book, “Believe Me: The Evangelical Road to Donald Trump,” to be published in June.

But the power of the presidency isn’t the only way Christian nationalism is advancing its agenda in America today. As Frederick Clarkson, senior research analyst at Political Research Associates, reported last week at Religion Dispatches, a coalition of Christian right groups — including the Congressional Prayer Caucus FoundationWallbuilders, the National Legal Foundation and others — have organized a major legislative initiative called “Project Blitz.” Its goal is to pass an outwardly diverse but internally cohesive package of Christian-right bills at the state level, whose cumulative impact would be immense.

The agenda underlying these bills is not merely about Christian nationalism, a term that describes an Old Testament-based worldview fusing Christian and American identities, and meant to sharpen the divide between those who belong to those groups and those who are excluded. It’s also ultimately “dominionist,” meaning that it doubles down on the historically false notion of America as a “Christian nation” to insist that a a particular sectarian view of God should control every aspect of life, through all manner of human institutions. Christian nationalists are not in a position to impose their vision now, and to be fair, many involved in the movement would never go that far. But as explained by Julie Ingersoll in “Building God’s Kingdom: Inside the World of Christian Reconstruction” (Salon interview here), dominionist ideas have had enormous influence on the religious right, even among those who overtly disavow them.

    Echoes of 1920s and 1930s Germany! – . . . and modern-day Israel or Saudi Arabia!

  • Meanwhile, I see the liar-in-chief, has been preaching nonsense about London hospitals and knife crime, while ingratiating himself with the US gun lobby at the NRA!

Trump’s London knife crime comments ridiculous, says surgeon

Prof Karim Brohi, a trauma surgeon at the Royal London Hospital, said it was “ridiculous” to suggest firearms could help combat knife violence.

He said the capital faced a “serious issue” but gunshot wounds were at least twice as lethal as knife injuries.
Referring to London in his NRA speech, Mr Trump, had said they don’t have guns. They have knives and instead there’s blood all over the floors of this hospital.

“They say it’s as bad as a military war zone hospital. Knives, knives, knives, knives.” He mimed a stabbing motion.

“London hasn’t been used to that. They’re getting used to it. It’s pretty tough.”

At least 38 people in London have lost their lives to knife crime so far this year, the Met Police has said.

Blimey 38 in the whole city!!!! That’s slightly more than ONE US school gun massacre!

But Marian Fitzgerald, a criminologist at the University of Kent, said although there had been a spike in knife-related deaths in London, it was a separate issue to gun control.

She told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “It’s just politically convenient, in a speech to the gun rights lobby, to try and make those comparisons and they are totally spurious.

The point Trump misses, is that people carrying arms and committing violent crimes is treated seriously in the UK and in the UK press!

I also note that for some reason, guns are banned for security reasons at the NRA meeting with Trump and Pence, but apparently with similar security issues, SCHOOLS are deemed by Trump to be safer from shooters if MORE GUNS are present on the premises!

  • . . . and with more “alternative facts” for the NRA from the fantasist president, European people who are more familiar with reputable and competent news reporting, easily recognise his objectionable stupidity!

The Trump delusion has All the answers!
Unfortunately they are all the WRONG answers!

US President Donald Trump has outraged French opinion by suggesting the 2015 attacks on Paris could have been stopped by giving people guns.

He mimicked gunmen summoning and shooting victims one by one, saying “Boom! Come over here!” and using his hand to imitate a gun being fired.

In reality, the attackers sprayed many of their 130 victims with semi-automatic fire and set off bomb belts.

“France expresses its firm disapproval of the comments by President Trump about the attacks of 13 November 2015 in Paris and asks for the memory of the victims to be respected,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Agnes von der Muhll said.

François Hollande, who was French president at the time of the attacks, said Mr Trump’s remarks were “shameful”.
They “said a lot about what he thinks of France and its values”, he added.

Manuel Valls, who was France’s prime minister in 2015, tweeted: “Indecent and incompetent. What more can I say?”

    What did Trump say exactly?

“Paris, France, has the toughest gun laws in the world…” he told the NRA.

“Nobody has guns in Paris, nobody, and we all remember more than 130 people, plus tremendous numbers of people that were horribly, horribly wounded.
Did you notice that nobody ever talks about them?

“They were brutally killed by a small group of terrorists that had guns.
They took their time and gunned them down one by one. Boom! Come over here. Boom! Come over here. Boom!

“But if one employee or just one patron had a gun, or if just one person in this room had been there with a gun, aimed at the opposite direction, the terrorists would have fled or been shot.”

Yep! The fantasist president loves making up his “alternative facts”!

For those who have never been to Paris, or who have never been outside of their private security bubble, FRENCH POLICE CARRY GUNS!

The standard equipment for members of the National Police usually includes a handgun, which officers are required to carry whenever they are on duty.[15]
The current standard handgun of the National Police is the Sig Sauer SP2022 The National Police may also use pump-action shotguns if necessary. – Gendarmes, being members of the military, also have access to the French armed forces’ standard assault rifle, the FAMAS.[21] Furthermore, they appear to have access to H&K submachine guns and pump-action shotguns

What did Trump say exactly? – “Nobody has guns in Paris, nobody”

That must be right!!!! Trump said so! – and the media quoted him!!!! 🙂

These things are sooooo difficult to research – If you are a MORON PRESIDENT who only reads junk news sources!

  • I see the NRA has found someone sufficiently corrupt and scandalous to lead them!

Oliver North: NRA elects Reagan-era figure as [its] president

The influential US gun lobby the National Rifle Association (NRA) has elected a former aide to President Ronald Reagan as its new president.

Oliver North, a retired US Marine Colonel, played a major role in the so-called Iran-Contra scandal.

During the 1980s he created a network which secretly sold weapons to Iran and diverted the proceeds to fund armed Nicaraguan anti-communist groups.

Yep! – Deeply involved in some of the USA’s clandestine “wars OF terror”!

He later became a conservative radio host and was a Fox News contributor.

Mr North announced he was retiring from Fox News in an NRA statement announcing his new role.

The Iran-Contra scandal was arguably the major controversy of the Reagan presidency, as the US Congress had forbidden sending military aid to rebels in Nicaragua.

In 1989, Mr North was convicted of three charges of unlawfully diverting US government funds.

His convictions were quashed on appeal in 1990 as it was found that witnesses may have been influenced by previous congressional testimony.

Wayne LaPierre, the NRA’s chief executive, described Mr North as “a legendary warrior for American freedom”.

The NRA has campaigned heavily against all forms of gun control, arguing that more guns make the country safer.

… and as we know – countries over-run with heavily armed militias and gangsters, where there are abundant supplies of guns from foreign sources, are the safest places in the world! (allegedly)!!!!!
