Arizona Asked a Young Earth Creationist to Review Evolution Teaching Standards

By David G. McAfee

A Young Earth Creationist who says he was called by God to “teach from the Biblical creation perspective” is part of a team in charge of reviewing Arizona’s science standards for teaching evolution. To the surprise of absolutely no one, it’s not going well.

Joseph Kezele, the president of the Arizona Origin Science Association, was appointed by State Superintendent Diane Douglass to serve on the committee last month. They are working to revise curriculum for science — and things were already dire when we first reported on the science standards back in May.

Now it has been confirmed by the Phoenix New Times that Kezele, who makes Creationist videos and teaches biology at a Christian school in Phoenix, is part of a small group who review and amends the new standards.

  1. Joseph Kezele, the president of the Arizona Origin PSEUDO-Science Association, was appointed by State Superintendent Diane Douglass to serve on the [science standards] committee last month.

    Situaltion clarified!

Next Diane Douglass “balanced” appointment: – president of the Flat-Earth Society to serve on the satellite navigation and communication comittee?! 🙂

  2. On the other hand, I’m sure that a competent atheist could review a theology syllabus with dispassionate accuracy. After all, in genuinely academic environments the literature is thoroughly reviewed, counter arguments are examined with fairness, if not with impartiality. I was taught Aquinas by an atheist, he never hid his own convictions, but did a great job in teaching the issues.

    Indeed so!
It is probable that ONLY an atheist could impartially review a comparitive religion syllabus covering a large range of religions, past and present.
Theists are usually predisposed to “mine and the wrong ones”, biases!
If they weren’t they would not have “faith” in some particular doctrine!

Whatever he may claim, I doubt that he teaches “biology”!
It is possible that he teaches “anatomy”, without any understanding of microbes, ecosystems or food-chains!
It is also likely that he teaches pseudoscientific garbage and science denial!

  5. @OP – State Superintendent Diane Douglass

The American political system really does seem to be able to pick the most clueless reactionary incompetents at state level as well as in the Trump administration!

This “stupidintendent” is busy undermining the teaching of biology because she is an uneducated know-it-all, with a personal agenda of using the education system for spreading her science-denial and deluded ignorance!
