You’ve changed my life for the better

Apr 18, 2019

I just wanted to thank Mr. Dawkins for being outspoken and passionate against the harms of religion, as well as teaching science and the beauty of evolution, especially in America where it is so desperately needed.

I want to thank him for helping me crawl out of the dark religious hole I was suffering in and freeing my mind. I don’t think words could ever describe the gratitude I have.

Growing up in an evangelical American church, I was homeschooled and kept under a rock when it came to any real science classes. I even had books about dinosaurs taken away from me because certain sects of American Christians don’t believe in them at all, and some don’t believe they are as old as science says they are. Or, I would frequently be given books that tried to prove evolution wrong as my science lesson. So reading Mr. Dawkins books was a whole new world for me. I began to appreciate the beauty of evolution, and it made so much sense to me. For the first time in my life I didn’t wonder about how we got here, I knew.

Growing up with judgmental “Christians”, I can only imagine the amount of hate mail that comes his way. People tend to only comment when they are angry. So I wanted to go out of my way to write something nice for Mr. Dawkins.

Please keep doing what you do, because you are helping and touching more lives than you know. You’ve changed my life for the better.

I hope to see you speak live one day.

  • Last month, I read Mr. Dawkins’ ”The Greatest Show On Earth” book and I was very very excited while reading it. It is now one of those books which has changed my life, which has made me see from a different perspective, which has made me become someone new. Believing in evolution without knowing nothing about it is the same thing with believing in god without examinating. I waw feeling mermerized while learning all those scientific evidences. I don’t understand why people don’t want to see what is real, I don’t understand why it is so difficult for them to accept the truth. I don’t understand why they don’t wonder about this planet we live, about our universte, about life itself. They always go after the small things which dont matter… Don’t they want to know about our history, about our planets history?  Why for once, they don’t see that what they believe is not real but a fairytale? why do they let themselves get fooled by the world from the moment they were born? Why don’t they look after for information? This book and these type of others need to be read in schools, they are musts! How are we supposed to learn science without these evidences and sources? Schools give kids the information without the evidence, that makes it a total mumbo jumbo. Whatever… I guess I’m very angry at this current system about teaching, learning and all…

I also want to point that I am from Turkey. In the last chapter (joints) of the Greatest Show On Earth, i saw that more than %50 of people in my country doesn’t believe in evolution of Darwin… Such misery! I am very sad for those people. Being born into this planet and knowing nothing about it! They don’t think anthing, i am sure if you ask them what is 4+4, they will answer you what they have memorized. They are too scared and lazy to understand the beauty truth of life.

Mr Dawkins, I want you to know that there are people like me even in those poor (science-poor) countries. I am 17 years old and I love science very much. I hope I can help science grow just like you.You are a big inspiration to me and i look forward to read all your books and learn much from them! I love you sir.

    Yours truly, ilayda.

It’s comments like yours that give me hope. You are a freethinker. I commend you for that but it’s not always an easy road. I think all the questions in your comment are excellent ones and all worthy of investigation. All of our regular visitors here can recommend sources where you can discover answers.

When I read The God Delusion it changed my life. The Selfish Gene changed my view of life further.

I hope you contribute further here.

I’m glad for you. I myself was blinded by Islamic religion being 20 years old, and I’ve spent 12 years of my life sitting at home and refusing from even those rights I could have.

So I’m very glad when young women understand it all better than me. When they don’t let religions cheat them.

Especially in Muslim countries and regions.

And of course I wanted to congratulate Kristen W. Freedom is always better than any illusion that only makes you weaker and weaker.

All the best to you. Your comment is important here.  Hold on to courage in your life when things get difficult. When I rejected my religion years ago I had no support but now you can find support here and in other places.

Religion oppresses us. It holds us down in this life.
