Trump administration halts fetal-tissue research by government scientists

US President Donald Trump’s administration is ending fetal-tissue research by government scientists and placing restrictions on academic researchers seeking grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for studies involving fetal tissue.

The administration said on 5 June that it will set up an ethics-review board to evaluate NIH grant applications that would support research with fetal tissue, which is collected from elective abortions. But the government has already decided against renewing its contract with a laboratory at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), that uses fetal tissue to study HIV.

“Promoting the dignity of human life from conception to natural death is one of the very top priorities of President Trump’s administration,” the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said in a statement.

The announcement comes after a sustained push by abortion opponents to limit scientific research with fetal tissue — despite warnings from researchers that using the tissue is the only way to study some health problems. Scientists employ fetal tissue to explore topics as diverse as infectious disease, human development and disorders of the eye.

  • Bigoted stupidity and ignorance, are the order of the day in Trump-land!

Other countries will do the research and their pharmaceutical companies will sell the resulting products to Americans.

It’s just another Trump step towards the stone age and third world industrial status! Report abuse

They put “Trump”  and “dignity” together in the same sentence?

It’s true  –  Americans don’t do irony. Report abuse

  • John R Cooper #4:  not until secular humanists organize ourselves in such a way that policy makers realize that it is we who are the majority and that they can safely ignore the religious groups which are an ever shrinking minority.   Not until!!

  • For any rational person,  the use of fetal tissue for medical research is no different, still less a breach of  the “dignity” of human life,  than using the kidneys of a freshly deceased person for transplant, or any other such tissues for research purposes.

This recently discovered  fetishisation of the fetus by the Religious Right and their enablers in the Republican Party ( it was barely an issue thirty years ago) is not motivated by any genuine humanitarian concerns.  It is simply a cynical dog-whistle ploy to energise a co-ordinated voting bloc – the extreme Evangelical fanatics – to remain onside.  As for Trump, we know he will lie, cheat and steal whatever it takes, so they have their champion there.
