    Alan4discussion,
I am always impressed by your replies. When you make the statement below am I to assume you are speaking for RDF.

“On this site we debunk such misleading poor quality information.”

I would be very pleased if the scientific method, or as I refer to P1,TS, EE, P2 repeat, the universal problem solving method, was taught around the…[Read more]

    Alan4discussion,

Great comments. Popper gave us the demarcation criteria in 1934. Its a relatively small tool in the epistemological arsenal. He gave us the most important contribution to the biggest problem in philosophy, the epistemological problem, in 1982 with his universal problem solving methodology, P1, TS, EE, P2 repeat.

    I’m no knocking…[Read more]

We know that the earth is round. We know that we advance our understanding of facts and values by standing on the shoulders of giants and seeing further. We will get it right. The Islamic world, 1.6b folk, one fifth of humanity, has made no contribution to our understanding of facts and values in 900 years. Yet they were responsible for all of…[Read more]

    Alan,

GREAT to get a comment. Unfortunately I have lost my reply but I will try again tomorrow. I have hit a number of vegan YouTube sites with the one and only diet and none have made a comment. All I can conclude is that they don’t do the most important bit of problem solving EE.

Popper would not have used the terms “empiricism” or “prove” and it is to him that we owe the scientific method outlined above. Incidentally, the very best YouTube explanation of the scientific method is that by Lullie Tullet (I may have misspelt her name). Virtually all the others are 2,400 or 300 years out of date. This demonstrates that…[Read more]

Henry Ford said “History is bunk”. Its worse than that. You can do something today and tomorrow, but you can’t do anything yesterday. History is just escapism and a persuit for those who don’t wish to do anything today or tomorrow. You have already decided that you don’t wish to cure disease, put man on multi-planets or prevent global warming if…[Read more]

Alan, You always beat me on stuff. I was big on stuff and always spent every penny on encyclopedias. But I gave it up before I was eleven and junked soft subjects like history and geography at thirteen. You do great arguments and to me that is all there is. Evolution over time (and it is only history), science, philosophy and politics are all…[Read more]

The UK chemical industry reduced it energy consumption by 30% some ten years ago. Its the third world that we have to worry about. There is a permanent orange plume covering tens of thousands of square miles over the Malaysian area due to wood burning. Yet we always blame the US for polluting the atmosphere with their gas guzzlers. But its the US…[Read more]

Thankfully we have Elon Musk. Please read his Wikipedia entry and be astonished by how much one man can do from Paypal to rockets to Tesla to SolarCity to mega battery production to the Hyperloop. Solar panels have come down in price massively and their efficiency has increased massively. Elon doesn’t patent his ideas, he wishes them to be freely…[Read more]

I have to compliment the commentators above for their research and contributions. Marco and Alan4discussion have taught me a lot of things that I didn’t know. Thank you everyone.

    John.wb,

I agree with you. The Labour Party promised a referendum on EU membership but didn’t honor that promise. UKIP were gaining massive ground as immigration became the biggest doorstep issue and the only way to resolve the UKIP threat was to hold a referendum.

Here is my patriotism. If you are playing a board game it came for the UK. If you are playing a ball game it came from the UK. If you had a revolution in 1776 it came from the UK. If you had a revolution in 1789 it came from the UK. If you live in a country with health, wealth and happiness and the freedom of the individual to do whatever he likes…[Read more]

    Alan4discussion,

Trade is business to business and not state to state or supra-state (EU). We hadn’t heard of trade negotiators until TIPPS. Free trade should be free trade and not negotiated deals. We love Adam Smith because he gave us the “invisible hand”, the mixed economy and free trade. Every economist since Adam, with the exception of the…[Read more]

We have lived in a godless world since 1739 when Hume destroyed the first cause argument. I’m no fan of a twentieth century author but I do like his last line in his Brown Book “of want you cannot know you should not speak” and that is where we have been in western Europe for some 150 years. Our churches don’t say pay up or you will go to hell…[Read more]

I voted LEAVE and for very good reasons.

It is true to say referendums are undemocratic. This is only our second referendum and hopefully our last. We want western parliamentary democracy which can do no wrong in the long-term. Mill described majority rule as the worst kind of tyranny and Popper seconded his language. Mob rule maybe good for the…[Read more]

“Please all you ISLAMOPHOBES, these attacks [like the 28,766 documented ones since 911] have NOTHING TO DO WITH ISLAM!”

    JimJFox,

You make a good point.Kings College, London, records every jihadist outrage and recorded 554 in November 2014 alone. How do we stop these atrocities which mostly kill innocent muslims?

These comments are full of politics. That’s good. Politics is life. In western parliamentary democracies the best argument generally wins. If it fails the first time it wins in the end. We not only empower YOU to put your argument forward, we beg that you do it. If you sit on your argument you are a waste of time and allow suffering to presist.…[Read more]

Then the scientists are mistaken. We give money to the EU and they give about half of it back to fund the CAP and university science. The same money will still be available to university science just without going through a third party, the EU. We may even provide better funding to university science. The EU has bigger calls of its financial…[Read more]

These events are so disturbing. Hacked to death in a public market place. The professor only taught English. What can you or I do to stop it? You can really only do one thing. You can join Amnesty International and sign up to every online petition.

I don’t like the terms atheist, agnostic, humanist and secular. They are too heavy and demand some education to get involved in any discussion about them. Joe public in the UK would move away from someone using these terms just as fast as he would move away from someone saying alleluia.
