I love cosmology. The vastness of space and the enormity of the numbers that define it.
I’ve just finished re-reading the wonderful “Five Ages of the Universe”, by Fred Adams and Greg Laughlin, their […]
The thing is I really don’t care about Stormy Daniels or prayer breakfasts – and neither should anyone else. These are distractions from the very real harm that this man is doing to our societies and our planet. I […]
Amid the predictable howls of outrage from the GOP it was refreshing to read the response of Mike Pence’s daughter, Charlotte – you can find a link here
The young lady has more class than the entire Republican […]
Yeah I’m going to go out on a limb here and say I agree with the judges decision. He was very clear; if the plaintiffs simply wanted to buy a cake that was in the shop, one that was already made, and if the baker […]

it is “telling patients that magic works”.
No it’s not. Just because we don’t understand (yet) how something works is no reason, on it’s own, to call it magic. History is full of examples where the sci […]
I always thought that I hated vegetarian cooking – turns out I just didn’t know how to cook. Thing is, with a nice steak you don’t have to do anything to make it taste great, just throw it on the grill and that’s […]
Why is it legal to kill animals for the fun of it anywhere?
Follow up question; why do some people even find it fun to kill an animal? I can live with many other viewpoints. My politics are liberal, but I […]

Astoundingly some Republicans are defending Moore, since it was “consensual”. She was 14 remember.

Can’t change the past. The present SUCKS. But, the future??? That’s up to us

As far as national anthems are concerned, – bollocks to them all
I wonder why so many people claim they are “proud to be an American” (or Canadian or Malawian). Why be proud of something over which you have n […]
Project Censored, a regularly scheduled KPFA program, claims to have been “celebrating independent journalism while fighting media censorship and supporting a truly free press”. I suggest the producers consider doing a segment on themselves.
Like you my gut feeling tells me the real number of abusers in the Catholic church is higher than this. My theory is that there are young men who, when faced with the realization they are sexually attracted to children, decide to seek refuge in theology in the hope that Jesus may cure them of this affliction. They need professional…[Read more]
Several studies have found that, at “only” 2%, the incidence of abuse by priests in the Catholic church does not exceed that in the general population. Be that as it may I have to ask, if these men are all being “called into service by God” perhaps God should do a better job of screening those in his employ.
PS. what is with the new ‘Prove your…[Read more]
My joy at the result is tempered by the realization that some 11 million French citizens went into a polling booth and willingly cast a ballot for a party which is fascist and racist. Trump is a buffoon but even he doesn’t approach the level of demagoguery and intolerance of Le Pen.
However I believe, (and hope), that most of the people who voted…[Read more]
Hitler and Stalin were both atheist, the worst murderers and liars of all time.
Wars are invariably caused by dogma, whether religious or otherwise. Nazism, Marxism, Christianity, Imperialism – all are dogmas and all have caused wars and been responsible for countless deaths and suffering.
To date I have never heard of a war started in…[Read more]
Like the rest of Trump’s campaign one-liners, (“I will build a wall and make Mexico pay for it”, “NAFTA is a disaster”, “we’re going to repeal Obamacare on day 1”), his pledge to scrap the Iran nuclear deal was a fantasy, something to make him sound like a tough guy. Unless he actually wants a nuclear-armed Iran, (and at this stage I wouldn’t put…[Read more]
“We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces“. Carl Sagan
I fear that 2016 will be remembered as the year Carl Sagan’s prophecy…[Read more]
No. The best ‘First Contact’ film ever made was District 9. Firstly, it was entirely original – it’s hard to think of a more genre-bending film. Second it succeeded on so many levels; as sci-fi flick, drama, thriller, comedy even, but ultimately as biting social commentary.
I enjoyed Arrival even if the ending was a bit of a letdown. But it was…[Read more]
For many years the US actively encouraged new immigrants to drop their native language. I can imagine how much damage was done to children by well-meaning parents who tried to raise them in a language that was not their own, all in a misguided (but entirely understandable) effort to help them integrate.
I learnt a second language later in life…[Read more]
I’m coming late to this thread – sorry if everyone else has moved on, but I feel I need to say a few things. I learnt something new from this post. It was not, I can say, something I particularly wanted to learn but nevertheless …
