Until we have mind-reading devices, I’m afraid that our inability to distinguish ‘radicalized’ terrorists from the more moderate kind 😐 is always going to limit the utility of these warm and fuzzy approaches. By the time we are certain we are dealing with a terrorist, the only hope to ‘deradicalize’ them is to be ready with a well-aimed piece…[Read more]

Hiring people on criteria other than qualifications and demonstrated competence (i.e. relevant criteria) is just recipe for a less effective organisation than you could otherwise have. I nominate the insanity that is identity politics to the list of things that “poisons everything”.

As a Canadian, here is my take on Justin Trudeau and our Liberals. I’d be surprised in my view was unique:

The Canadian Liberals are typically act in a fashion that benefits their pocket books and the pocket books of those to whom the Liberals are beholden. Typically in Canada, this means companies that extract oil and other resources.…[Read more]

All your comments would certainly be true for any real attempt at medication created to administer an actual dose of the original agent. My understanding of homeopathy is that they use such a vast dilution series in preparing their little pills that dose just isn’t a issue. They dilute way past Avogadro’s number, to the point where…[Read more]

Unless someone forgot the dilution series, I think James Randi’s demonstration tells us all we need to know here:

As long as the “remedies” are prepared correctly, babies are more likely to suffer harm from the lack of real treatment. Of course these parents should have saved the homeopathic remedies…[Read more]

We really need better standards for pseudoscience. After all, shouldn’t a proposal have at least some vaguely scientific-sounding plausibility in order to be called pseudoscience? Homeopathy clearly belongs in the “blatant nonsense/utter rubbish” category, and not debasing good pseudoscience with its comedic levels of ridiculousness.

Hmm … maybe it relates to the fact that doctorial studies are by their nature very effort intensive, typically difficult, and high stress. Add to this that students often have financial worries, and in a modern twist now face increasingly dubious job prospects upon graduation (nothing like be the most educated person at your McWorkplace). Could…[Read more]

Any voter that watches television or listens to the radio could not have avoided hearing about the innumerable costs of leaving the EU (including the problems it would cause for UK research.) I still think the public’s ability to at least occasionally reign-in the country’s “leaders” is far too important to have slip away. The EU needs some…[Read more]

This irony here is that physicians are prescribing opiods to people with chronic pain — which is to say they are giving them addictive drugs to which they’ll build a tolerance when they need long-term pain management — but if you go surgery and really need a good pain killer for just a few days, they’ll only give you paracetomal (i.e. nothing)…[Read more]
