I would certainly further the interstellar drive technology research; it will take years before any viable system is ready, and any serious space travel/exploration can commence.
    For the rest: status quo.

Let’s get some bigotry out of the way first!
Yes, Pol Pot and Stalin were atheists, but the atrocities they committed were for personal gain and stature, not in the name of atheism. Hitler was actually a single child from very dysfunctional catholic family.
Religious people blame atheists for not having a moral code? Two things: Read the law of…[Read more]

As a pure scientific program, I am with it; this could be a significant step in de-extinction of a lot of species.
On the other hand, supposing it actually works and a single full grown mammoth is created (Which is questionable since the mammoth DNA has been degenerating for centuries), that would be a disaster for the mammoth in question, since…[Read more]

Here in the Netherlands, a census of 2013 revealed the following:
18% openly religious (A large part of that immigrant muslims)
    26% openly secular
    56% agnostics/nones
So, in all, 82% of the population is not religiously affiliated; thank god 🙂

    Hi Morpheus,
I think it was Richard himself who replied to the respect for religion question, in the following fashion: I respect the person, but not the person’s (mental) disease; that has to be eradicated/treated.
    Nice one 🙂

I concur with Craig that it’s only the religious who experience disquiet at the notion that morale is developed by human society, rather than a god-given. Both the torah (and later the talmud) and the quran have codes of conduct (which may be mistaken for moral code) for everyday events. Even the bible has it’s 10 commandments, of which 7 are…[Read more]

In the minds of the religious, the religion is a force for good; that is a (mis)given in their minds. Pastors are treated with respect, without any track record to have earned that respect..
In reality, religion is just a money machine, and that is probably why so many idealistic people who want to be a force for the good, are turned off by the…[Read more]

5 Thanks Cantaz, I’ll give that a try. Hope it runs with Windows 10 as well.

I tried downloading this to a somewhat older Android version, and it told me “No device found”
Same with an Iphone 5: wrong IOS.
And of course, a PC with Windows is out of the question!
Why not release this as a DOCX format, so everyone can view it?
That’s the purpose of this platform.

The Johnson amendment was a good idea at the time, when religion was on the uptake, and started to form a political force. By granting them tax-exempt status, the amendment told them to shut up.
Nice idea, and it worked for a while.
Reality of today? All 350 members of congress claim to be religious, and every president claims to be religious as…[Read more]

@ #1. I fully agree. Sadly, the reality is that the majority of women under islamic rule, cannot get an education, or a useful job; Malala being shot in the head is a stark reminder of how bad life under islam can be.
A woman under islam is nothing more than a sperm receptacle and a slave to be bought, sold or abandoned. Women may have the…[Read more]

Probably best to attack it with humor in a cartoon, say Southpark style on Youtube, describing all the improbabilities of such an event.
Things that ridicule the whole idea, such as:
How did he get the lions from Africa, or the dingo’s from Australia.
How did he get the ara’s from South America, or mountain lions from North America; must have been…[Read more]

Yeah, the bible is right BECAUSE it is the bible (Aquinas, I think),

  • Paul posted a new activity comment 4 years, 3 months ago

Well, as Dennett already pointed out, you may supplement the doctrine of the school with the other religions, and point out that every religion is 100% true.
Add to that some life origin stories from, say, the aboriginals and Krishna, and the whole thing becomes a laughing matter to a reasonably intelligent child. In other words, beat them at…[Read more]

Not directly related, but an example of how this SI can be abused, was during the Nazi era: prior to invading a next country, they would sway the government of that country to hold a census (By bullying, bribe or threats against individual govt. members), in which religion was also stated. So, after the blitzkrieg was complete and another country…[Read more]

    Hi Stephen,
No nothing secret, but right smack in the public face of the US, as Herb is already doing with the Secular Coalition. It just needs another boost in the public image. Here in Holland, only 18% declare themselves religious, so it’s not an issue here.

You could spend a lifetime being a good atheist, and still not get the recognition of being a good person. It is a case of many people going it alone.
It is in the (Financial) interest of the religious organisations to demonize anyone who disbelieves, and we pretty well know to what disastrous results that can lead (Holocaust/genocide).
    I think…[Read more]

To the religious minded, having no belief in the supernatural equates a big gaping hole in your personal make-up. To them, you’re just not complete; like missing a leg or an arm. So they may feel pity (If they are of the friendly variety) for you, however misplaced that is. Or conversely, kill you.
Of course, the statement is wrong; I (and many…[Read more]

I would be interested to see how a reformation/enlightment within islam would take place. The obvious way is to drop religion altogether, as most people in Europe have.
