Arthur C. Clarke, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” I fear we are entering a time when our own present day science and technology qualifies. Not the technology of some advanced alien civilization, not that of our far future, but today’s earthly every day technology.
With a population that cannot tell science…[Read more]

If you allow exception to laws on religious grounds, then you MUST be prepared to allow this equally for ALL religions. If someone claims that their religion demands that they disobey this statute or that statute, once you’ve set the precedent that religion trumps law (pun not intended but it does seem apt!), you cannot deny anyone the right to…[Read more]

It’s not clear from the report that this was the case. In the UK, it’s unlikely that this action would be considered reasonable and justified unless…[Read more]

Even before this, I’d thought it a near certainty that a civilisation other than ours has/does/will exist somewhere in the universe. The number of stars is just so large, and the life of the universe so long (if indeed it will ever end), that even if intelligent life is rare in all of space time, there is still likely to be (have been/will be)…[Read more]

anton >It seems to me that xx or xy sex chromosones cannot be changed, whatever surgery is undertaken, or whatever one chooses to wear.
I recall a discussion in the press some years ago regarding gender testing of athletes in major competitions. It isn’t that simple at all! Babies can, and quite often are, assigned a gender at birth that doesn’t…[Read more]
